What Eagles SB Spread Would Be With A Healthy Wentz
As the Eagles get ready to play the Patriots this weekend in Super Bowl 52, many fans and analysts can’t help but wonder what the Eagles Super Bowl odds would be with a healthy Carson Wentz. An exercise in futile statistics though it might be, the question is an interesting one. Of course, there’s the chance that – without the Wentz injury – the Eagles defense doesn’t step up bigtime and clamp down on opponents like the Falcons (10 points allowed) and the Vikings (7 points allowed) on their way to the championship round. Those are variables nobody can gauge.
But we do know this: Before Wentz went down with a torn ACL in Week 14, he was a leading MVP candidate (right behind Tom Brady in most metrics, but ahead in the all-important passing TDs category). We also know that, since he’s been replaced by backup Nick Foles, the Eagles’ offensive output has been reduced by nearly half (at least until that Minnesota blowout in the NFC Championship). However, we also know this: Even without the potential league MVP leading their offense, the Eagles are only +4.5 underdogs (and +155 on the straight moneyline) against New England. It is difficult to imagine that, with a healthy Wentz, the Eagles wouldn’t fare at least a field goal better on the line. In fact, it’s not out of the question that they’d have pick ‘em odds or even be favorited by a point or two. I mean, with a Wentz offense and that mighty Eagles defense.
But wait a minute. Did you know that, since Week 7 of the 2018 NFL season, the Patriots have had the best scoring defense – allowing the fewest opponent points per game – in the entire league? If football is about trends, the Eagles D has been better over the long haul, but the Pats D has been better lately. And consider this: What if Julian Edelman was healthy for the Patriots? What if linebacker Dont’a Hightower was, too? Then I think the spread would be right back where it is, and just like that, the whole thing’s a wash.
LegalGamblingUSA knows hypotheticals are fun, and every Super Bowl has them in spades. But to see how things really go down, just watch the game. But maybe don’t pick the Patriots to cover. They almost never do.
