New York Could Soon Be Home To Online Poker With Casinos Opening
- New York is opening a Resorts World casino in the Newburgh Mall, with rumors of a casino opening in Manhattan.
- New York is surrounded by states with online poker such as Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
The Empire State is currently working on launching mobile sportsbooks.
NEW YORK – New York’s gambling landscape has been evolving in recent years and online poker may just be the next face for the Big Apple.
New York has neighboring states in New Jersey and Pennsylvania that both offer online poker to its residents. New York is also working to launch mobile sportsbooks, a practice the state was adamantly against in the past.
While NY has not announced any online poker additions to its legal gambling market, with the moves being made within the gaming industry of the state, it would not be surprising if this became the next step.
New York Casinos
Online poker would fit perfectly in the New York gambling space as residents would easily embrace the iGaming option.
Playing poker with online platforms or through mobile apps would be another avenue for New York to gain revenue as they continue to struggle in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. New York pushed legislation for mobile sports betting in order to recoup some of the losses incurred by the outbreak.
Using online gambling as a new stream for revenue is common. Other states launched sports betting during the pandemic and New York has continued to expand its local gaming options.
The Empire State already has a thriving casino in Resorts World Catskills and will be opening another Resorts World in the Newburgh Mall in 2022.
"We look forward to breaking ground soon and delivering on our commitment to create good-paying union jobs for local residents, help revitalize the Newburgh Mall, serve as an economic engine in the Hudson Valley, and begin generating revenue for New York State’s public schools,” said Meghan Taylor, a vice president of government affairs and public relations for Resorts World.
In addition, developers are aiming to launch a casino in Manhattan. New York has not jumped on expanding gambling options as much as states like New Jersey has in the past, making this a sign that the added revenue is a major motivator.
Online poker is one of the biggest iGaming entities in the US and would rake in a lot of revenue for the state.
Casinos in Detroit saw more than $110 million in revenue with a large chunk of it being credited to online poker.
When Will Online Poker Launch In NY?
New York legislators have not pushed any bill to add online poker but it could be just a matter of time before it happens. After mobile sports betting launches, lawmakers will see the adjusted gross revenue they’ll be bringing in monthly.
Revenue from mobile sportsbooks will be a determining factor on whether or not New York embraces online poker as well.
