New TN Sports Betting Applications Unaffected By Regulatory Changes
- Three new Tennessee online sportsbooks may be added this year.
- Sports betting regulatory responsibilities in TN will change hands by 2022.
- The Sports Wagering Advisory Council is hoping to have an executive director by September.
NASHVILLE - Later this week, three online Tennessee sports betting operators will be contacted by the Tennessee Education Lottery regarding their application review.
The TEL board will have 90 days to process and approve the applications for launch - a process that will be migrated to the Sports Wagering Advisory Council on January 1.
While the transition of regulatory responsibility hasn't affected Tennessee sportsbooks applications, there was a possibility that application reviews would be halted until the transition process was completed next year. Luckily this doesn't seem to be the case, and the approval decision for applications will most likely be made at the next TEL board meeting scheduled for August 18.
Operators are likely anxious to have an answer from that meeting since the NFL betting season will be getting started around that time.
The Hunt Is On
Although SWAC is taking over sports betting regulations, they have yet to find an executive director.
There are 19 applicants - each one with an eclectic range of qualifications - and chairman Billy Orgel wants to have it settled by early September.
Tennessee's legal gambling operations are still in their infancy stages, so some changes like this were to be expected.
