BATON ROUGE, La. - Sports bettors in the Bayou State should be raising eyebrows right about now as a sports betting bill has made it past the Louisiana House of Representatives.
The bill, HB 697, would allow for both mobile and land-based sports betting to come to Louisiana. On the House floor, the bill passed with a final vote of 77 yes and 24 no.
On the bill, it allows the state’s casinos, horse race tracks, and any other legal gambling locations to offer sports betting.
As for the regulations on the bill, bettors would have to be at least 21 years of age in order to place any bets. Looking at the tax rate, the land-based sports betting locations will be taxed 10% while mobile and online sports betting sites will see an 18% tax rate. There is also potential for 41 different online sportsbook operators to enter the state which would be the among the highest in the country.
As for what Louisiana sports bettors can expect next, although the bills got through the House, it still must go through the Senate now and succeed with a two-thirds majority vote in order to move on to the Governor. With that said, sports betting in Louisiana would not launch until sometime in 2022.
