Experts Warn, Quarantines Could Lead To Problem Gambling Uptick
- The shift to online gambling may lead to increased problematic behaviors in at-risk players.
- Since brick-and-mortar casinos are closed online gambling is becoming more popular across the US.
- Online Casinos are expected to see a significant uptick in their usage.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — With the coronavirus pandemic forcing brick-and-mortar casinos to close, many gamblers have turned to online casinos to continue playing their favorite games. As more players turn to online casinos experts expect an uptick in problematic behaviors in high-risk players.
These high-risk players are more likely to become problem gamblers than the average online and traditional casino players.
As online casinos allow players the convenience of playing from the comfort of their homes without any barriers to prevent them becoming a problem gambler. Another reason some experts are concerned is that many online casinos are operating 24/7 and that kind of availability puts even more players at risk especially with the coronavirus pushing bettors online now more than ever.
“We believe every risk factor for gambling problems is increasing right now,” said Keith Whyte, executive director of the National Council on Problem Gambling.
“(Casino) closures and quarantine can increase risk factors, there’s a shift to online gambling — which may have some higher risk factors — and then the impact on state budgets (for gambling addiction resources and programs) may disproportionately impact available behavioral health services.”
If gamblers do have a problem going to get help in time, they could face issues because a lot of the state’s health resources are being used to fight the coronavirus. However, this shouldn’t prevent gamblers from still trying to seek help.
The National Council on Problem Gambling is still operating during these times and can be reached by calling 1-800-522-4700. Much like the online casinos operating around the country, the hotline is available to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
As time passes online casinos and sportsbooks will continue to shift their focus online to get as many players as possible to continue using their betting platforms while brick-and-mortar casinos are closed.
