DFS From DraftKings Trails Out Of Oregon For Sportsbook Hopes
- DraftKings is expected to become the official sportsbook of the Oregon Lottery at some point in the future.
- “Scoreboard” is the official sports betting platform offered by the lottery and powered by SBTech software but SBTech was bought out by DraftKings in 2020.
- Until DraftKings becomes a sports gaming application in Oregon, they have ceased all DFS activities, allowing FanDuel to pick up their business in that area for the state.
SALEM, Ore. – DraftKings’ DFS platform in Oregon has stopped taking players as of Monday, in the hopes that they’ll be able to open a sportsbook in the state. Currently, DraftKings is in talks to become the official sports betting operator for the Oregon Lottery.
What Would This Entail For Oregon Sports Betting?
Presently, the Oregon Lottery has a sportsbook application known as “Scoreboard” that is run by SBTech and their software. However, DraftKings purchased SBTech last year which is why this discussion to switch over to a DraftKings sports betting application is taking place. In making this move, there has been a pause put on all DFS action via DraftKings in Oregon for now.
Although there are no rules to make DraftKings take this kind of action while waiting to hear about the crossover with Scoreboard and the Oregon Lottery, it’s a thumbs up for FanDuel. DFS players will now need to look to FanDuel for all of their DFS needs until further notice which means more profits on the DFS side of things for FanDuel in Oregon.
Are There Any Laws About DFS In Oregon?
There are no laws in Oregon that say residents cannot join a platform and engage in the activity. While in 2017 lawmakers tried to open up an industry for it, nothing came to pass. However, at the same time, there is nothing written in the lawbooks to ban the pastime in the Beaver State.
What’s Next?
DraftKings will eventually become the official sportsbook for the Oregon Lottery as they own the operator being used now. It’s only a matter of when an official transition will take place. There has been no word from the Oregon Lottery about their sportsbook application. Insiders believe that it’s a good sign that DraftKings has ceased their DFS activities in Oregon as it shows they’re closer to becoming an official sportsbook in the state.
Once sports betting in Oregon can be done via this platform, DFS re-introduction can be discussed. At the moment, DraftKings has their sights set on sports gaming, especially with the NFL season inching closer than ever, being just weeks away with the season opener scheduled for September 9.
