MANHATTAN, N.Y. – Owner and CEO of Darby Development Dennis Drazin has been inducted to the 2019 class for the Sports Betting Hall of Fame.
Some Of Drazin’s History
Horse racing and betting have been a very large part of Drazin’s life since the 1960s, when his father took him to the races.
He eventually became an advisor to the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association in the 1990s. From there, he became a chairman of the New Jersey Racing Commission in 2009. He eventually saved Monmouth Park from shutting down when Darby Development took over the park.
From then until now, he has been helping run Monmouth Park. The historic track was the first location in New Jersey to take a bet on sports. Governor Phil Murphy made the first legal sports bet at Monmouth Park.
Leading The Charge Towards Legalization
Back in 2012, New Jersey lawmakers filed to legalize sports betting in the state. This caused various sports leagues to sue the state. No one really wanted to take the challenge, but Drazin decided to lead the charge to fight the lawsuit.
He suffered many court losses against the leagues, but that was all a part of his plan. He knew to win, he would have to take the leagues to the Supreme Court. He had already begun expansion of Monmouth Park because he figured he would win.
And he did just that. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States and New Jersey won against the leagues with a 6-3 vote. This allowed for New Jersey and any other state to offer legal gambling in the USA because the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was overturned.
Recognition For His Contribution
The Sports Betting Community (SBC) has decided to induct Drazin to the Sports Betting Hall of Fame due to his contribution on legalizing sports betting in New Jersey and across the United States.
“In an industry that isn’t shy of them, Dennis is a tenacious character and he played a key part in getting sports betting legalized in New Jersey. He’s definitely earned his berth in the Hall of Fame,” said Sue Schneider, Community Direct at SBC.
The Hall of Fame ceremony is going to happen on April 25. The location of the ceremony is at the Sky Room in Manhattan. Afterward, they will move on to a sports betting conference called Betting on Sports America at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in New Jersey.
