Connecticut Moves Closer To Regulated Sports Betting

• Connecticut lawmakers are moving forward on passing sports betting law following the passing of House Bill 6451 in March of 2021.
• Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont has reached an agreement with the Mohegan Tribe and Mashantucket Pequot Tribe that will allow CT to offer sports betting and online casino gaming through their locations.

HARTFORD, Conn. – The battle for regulated sports betting in the state of Connecticut continues to experience some major victories so far in the year 2021.

Just last week, CT Governor Ned Lamont was able to reach an agreement with the state’s Mohegan Tribe and Mashantucket Pequot Tribe that would allow sports betting and online casino gaming to be held through the Tribe’s gambling venues.

Following the passing of House Bill 6451 just two weeks ago, the CT Joint Public Safety and Security Committee is now moving more bills in support of legal online sportsbooks and sports betting in CT.

Connecticut would become just the third state in New England to bring sports betting into the regulated realm, joining New Hampshire and Rhode Island.

The bills that were brought forward and approved deal with protections for sports betting, iGaming, and online casino platforms, as well as online lottery and online keno platforms.

Also, the bills would allow for a tribal resort in Bridgeport that could provide sports betting in physical form as well as online gambling and lottery services.

Now that these bills are filed with the Legislative Commissioners’ Office, they can begin to draft the official literature of the laws which will then by voted on by the larger group of lawmakers.

The goal is to have legal sports betting up and running by the 2021 NFL season.

The terms of the passed bills include an 18% tax rate for the first five years of iGaming platforms, increasing to 20% after that time period.

This also includes a 13.75% tax rate for all sports betting and wagering services supported by the state.

This shows a tremendous positive sentiment for those looking forward to legal online gambling in Connecticut in the near future.
