PIERRE, S.D. - Deadwood Casinos in South Dakota have reopened their slot machines and table games to the public in June and the results have been very successful. The casinos have been shut down since March due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Deadwood Gaming Association reports that June 2020 betting handle is actually higher than what was in 2019.

The influx of funds is attributed to the residents and tourists of the South Dakota area being eager to return to gambling amidst the pandemic.

Deadwood Casino Returns

South Dakota gamblers have come out in droves to get in on the action at the Deadwood Casino.

Mike Rodman, Deadwood Gaming Association executive director has reported a 13.75% increase in betting handle in June 2020 from June 2019.

This increase in betting handle marks Deadwood casino’s biggest June handle since 2014. As Deadwood casinos were one of the first gambling operators to reopen in South Dakota, it makes sense for the mass influx of betting handle.

“I do think it’s a record June,” said Rodman.

In total, the reported gross revenue for June 2020, adjusted taxably, is $10,239,651. This comes from a 50.39% increase in slot machine revenue and a 12.08% decrease in revenue from table games like craps and roulette.

This boom in the betting handle is good news for the legal casino industry in South Dakota as Deadwood suffered greatly when the state shut down operations in March due to the pandemic.

Now the casino operator is hoping the influx of gamblers continues into the summer as they attempt to recoup some of the losses garnered this year.

As more casinos open up, South Dakota residents are expected to partake in legal gambling at a high rate. Deadwood Casino is expected to continue to see major profits as the months go on.
