Coronavirus Attacks World Series Of Poker, Autumn Date In Talks
- The coronavirus pandemic has postponed the World Series of Poker.
- Organizers are aiming towards an autumn date for a possible return.
LAS VEGAS — The coronavirus has struck yet again as the 51st World Series of Poker has been postponed. It was supposed to take place on May 26 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Other options are being discussed to make it work.
51st WSOP
It was only a matter of time before the WSOP was postponed as Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak had ordered all of the state’s casinos to shut down their operations until at least April 30 to try and prevent spreading the virus.
With the postponement, organizers of the event are now aiming towards an autumn date for the famous poker tournament to take place.
“We are committed to running the World Series of Poker this year but need additional time to proceed on our traditional scale while prioritizing guest and staff well-being,” said Ty Stewart, executive director of the World Series of Poker.
As officials try to regroup and figure out what is next for the televised poker event, online poker tournaments are said to be held in the meantime.
“In the interim, official WSOP competitions are expected to be played online this summer— we will soon announce details of an expanded series of tournaments to be played on WSOP.com and through partnership with international operators, which will allow players to chase WSOP glory from their homes,” said Stewart.
For people who are still looking to partake in online poker, however, there are plenty of legal gambling options to keep up with the game they enjoy.
